Emily Bakkum, Fargo, ND

Emily has had chronic headaches associated with severe neck pain every day of her life for the past seven years following a car accident when she was twenty years old. To alleviate this pain she tried many different therapies and alternatives. She was prescribed muscle relaxers, blood thinners, seizure medication, depression medication, anti-inflammatory medication, and many different kinds of pain medication. She tried acupressure, acupuncture, other chiropractors, physical therapy, visualization therapy, and exercise therapy. Emily’s migraines were so severe that she missed out on a lot of her 20’s. She had little energy, which would cause her to crash quite often. “I would fall asleep any time I tried to watch TV or a movie. I even fell asleep in a meeting once or twice!” This chronic pain also drove her into a bad depression. Life seemed hopeless to Emily when no one could give her help her with her pain.

Today, she has much more energy, her pain is greatly reduced, and she rarely gets headaches. Emily explains, “A neurological chiropractor literally saved my life. I wasn’t really living when I was constantly in pain.” She is able to exercise and depression is no longer an issue in her life. She describes her life now as, “healthier and happier.”

Candy Macy, Minot, ND

Candy has suffered from chronic pain in her hip area for about fourteen years and had injuries on her right side from exercise. She came into the office after trying different chiropractors, physical therapy, and aerobic dance specific to the hip area. She felt pain when bending over, she was unbalanced when squatting and could no longer play tennis or bike without being in extreme pain. In Candy’s words, “I was very tired from fighting my body. I could not be active outside like I used to be.”

Her condition has improved greatly since starting care at Horizon Family Chiropractic in October of 2007. She is exercising regularly again, and can even shovel snow for 2 hours and still feel great. Candy states, “I used to worry that I’d be crippled when I’m 70 because no one was doing anything to help me and I ran out of ingenuity on my own.”

Candy is no longer worried about losing any more functionality and was happy to find a caring doctor that really listened well to her. “I am rejoiced at the improvements in my health.”

Anonymous, Minot, ND

This patient has had chronic recurring bladder infections since she was a toddler. “It wasn’t until I turned 20 that the pain increased tremendously.”

In June of 2006, she began having symptoms of an infection again. In addition to the standard burning sensation that accompanies bladder infections, she was going to the bathroom every 5 minutes or would have episodes where she was not able to go at all. She felt constant pain when she would walk or sit. Every time she touched her stomach, she felt pain. “I couldn’t play with my son as much as I wanted to. I couldn’t make any sudden movements. I was a prisoner in my own body.” She went to the doctor and they gave her a prescription for an antibiotic. After taking the correct doses, the infection came back. Eventually her doctor recommended that she see a Urologist. She had multiple tests run, and even had a cat scan. Every test came back normal. “From June to November 2006, I was on at least 10 different antibiotics.”

In November of 2006, she discovered she was pregnant. Her doctor put her on antibiotics through the entire pregnancy to protect the baby from getting the infection. After her daughter was born, she was taken off the antibiotics and the infection came back. In the summer of 2008, at the first symptom, she decided to take a different approach. She took caffeine completely out of her diet and began drinking water like a camel. It seemed to help, but the infection still did not go away.

Because of their good reputation, she went to Horizon Family Chiropractic in November of 2008. A couple hours after her very first appointment, she had no pain. “I felt normal! I couldn’t believe it! I can run, jump, and play with my kids. I am so thrilled. I never thought I would be normal again!”

Amber and Mckenzie H., Minot, ND

Amber came into Horizon Family Chiropractic to get relief from her intense lower back pain and numbness in her right leg, three middle toes, and fingers. Every sneeze or cough would create great pain for Amber.

Amber began to experience numbness in both hands during her pregnancy with her second child. She was very frustrated during this time and anxiously awaited the delivery. She could not even grasp her hairbrush to brush her hair because of the severity of numbness in her fingers. Unfortunately for Amber, more health problems were yet to come. One day, as Amber was trying to catch her two year old daughter, something went very wrong in her lower back. The pain was so debilitating that she was unable to move. She tediously crawled to a phone and called her mother to come over to take care of the kids. Amber was unable to walk for four days. Following this acute period, she continued to have pain in her lower back, her toes were numb and her left foot felt very heavy. These health obstacles persisted and made it difficult for Amber to perform day to day activities. “It was hard to walk up steps. My leg felt like lead. It hurt to sit for long periods of time and I could not clean the house.”

Amber was referred to Horizon Family Chiropractic by a good friend. Since receiving care at HFC, Amber is now able to clean her house and play with her children. She even states, “I am able to lift and hug my oldest daughter.” Not only has Amber’s pain subsided, she has regained feeling in her fingers and toes. Additionally, her stress level has decreased greatly because she no longer is dependent on her husband to clean the house and take care of her children.

After Amber found success herself at HFC, she decided to bring in seven month Mckenzie in the hopes that she could get relief from sinus congestion. She was also concerned about Mckenzie’s feeding habits and sleeping patterns. Mckenzie was spitting up often, thumping her leg while she was feeding, and was not sleeping more than four hours at a time. With just three visits, Mckenzie’s leg no longer thumps while feeding, her congestion has decreased significantly, she rarely spits up, and she sleeps between 6 to 8 hours a night.

Now, both Amber and Mckenzie are functioning well. Amber has much more energy and Mckenzie can play longer without getting upset.

Amy Schutt, Minot, ND
Amy has been a patient at Horizon Family Chiropractic since June 2007.  She was looking for relief from her intense migraines but was pleasantly surprised when this was not the only health issue she was able to find relief from.

Migraines became a problem for Amy when she was only seven years old and every time they would occur they would last for at least 24 hours.  These episodes resulted in numerous trips to the emergency room and limited exercise.  Almost every year in school, Amy would miss the max amount of days allowed, and as she got older she would call in sick to work often.
Over a fifteen year span, she had seen neurologists, many different chiropractors, had been put on different medications, and tried massage therapy. Today, Amy will go months without having migraines and they are not nearly as severe as they were prior to her visits at HFC.  She was also treated for her knee and ankle pain.  After tearing her ACL and breaking her Tibia and Fibula, she was left with a lot of inflammation and a lack of mobility.

Amy not only has more mobility and decreased pain but she has noticed major sleep improvements.  She believes that the different approaches used at HFC made the difference for her. “The adjustments were very precise and didn’t leave me hurting, like I had experienced in the past”.

Brenda S., Minot, ND

Brenda had been suffering from chronic pain for years before she came to Horizon Family Chiropractic.  She had two surgeries prior to her first visit.  She had a Microdisectomy that seemed to be unsuccessful and a Lumbar Fusion that gave her partial relief.  Brenda was still left with pain down her left side starting at her hip and extending down to her ankle.  In an effort to relieve her pain, Brenda tried physical therapy, chiropractic visits, pain medication, neural dorsal stimulation, tens units, massage, and rest.
Even with all of her efforts, Brenda was still in a significant amount of pain.  At work she suffered from fatigue and pain from sitting or standing too long and had to switch from full-time to part-time.  This created a sense of hopelessness and sadness for Brenda because after seeing five neurosurgeons, no one could pin point the cause of Brenda’s pain.

Since coming to HFC, Brenda has less pain, improved abilities to sit, stand, and walk.  She also noticed that her energy level has gone up along with her interest in exercise and activities with family and friends.  “I was so excited and thrilled to find someone who was willing to go the extra mile.” For the first time in over five years, Brenda has no pain in her left hip area for short periods of time.  She believes that the neurological methodologies and techniques have been instrumental to her continuing success and associated reduced pain with daily activities.  “HFC has made a tremendous difference in the quality of my life and management of my pain.”

Connie Plesuk, Minot, ND

Connie came to Horizon Family Chiropractic seeking treatment for numbness in her fingers, inflammation in her joints, and back pain in August of 2008.  A large majority of Connie’s pain and inflammation came from a recent battle with cancer.  After chemotherapy and radiation, Connie noticed numbness in her thumb and first two fingers on each side. Her back pain was a result of life on the farm with a few falls and heavy lifting.
These conditions had a detrimental effect on Connie’s work. Her shoulders and elbows would become inflamed after typing for a short period of time. She would frequently get lower back pain and headaches.

Connie feels her health has improved considerably. “We took baby steps at the beginning and within a month or two I had a much wider range of motion, needed less pillows at night and did not have achy wrists or elbows.”  Along with this, her stress level has decreased, she sleeps better at night, and she has more energy.

Another aspect of HFC that Connie really appreciated was the exercises that she was given as “homework.” “They have helped strengthen and support the areas that I was having trouble with.”

Mary Ann Fitchner, Minot, ND

Two years ago, in August of 2007, Mary Ann fainted from an undetermined loss of blood. As she fell, she hit her neck and spinal cord.  After she had regained consciousness, she was horrified to realize she was paralyzed from the neck down.

She began recovery in a rehabilitation hospital where she resided for six weeks.  Here, she received physical and occupational therapy.  After her release, she continued with this therapy which over months helped her learn to feed herself again, hold a pencil, write, walk, and live independently again.  “Yet, as a piano teacher and an organist, I felt the need to pursue some additional type of treatment to specifically increase the use of my hands and fingers.”  This is when she heard of Horizon Family Chiropractic from a friend.  “How coincidental that my first appointment was on August 13, 2008: Exactly a year from the date of my fall.”

After a few appointments, work with exercises, ultrasound, mirroring imaging, and much more her fingers have gotten to the point where she can play the piano again.   “I know I will probably be dealing with certain limitations in that area for some time yet, and maybe always, but I have come so far, and I am so thankful for all of the help and where I am at.”  Mary Ann feels that because of the help she received at Horizon Family Chiropractic and an additional focus on nutrition, all the areas of her life have improved.

Sally Lubrich, Minot, ND

After five years of radiating pain in her shoulder, neck, and back, Sally came to Horizon Family Chiropractic in the hopes of finding some relief.  She had seen different massage therapists with different techniques but experienced pain afterwards.
Along with her arm and shoulder pain, Sally would also experience headaches frequently.  “I would get such headaches and it limited what I could do if I had to use my right arm and shoulder.  I would wake up at night from the pain.” Unfortunately, soon after starting care at HFC, Sally had two falls.  These falls created inflammation in her lower back and intense pain.

Sally was very impressed with the relief she has gained during the time when she was receiving care at HFC. “With only a couple treatments, I could not believe the improvement”.

Today, Sally is able to use her arm and shoulder without experiencing pain and was able to recover from her two falls much more quickly than she thought possible.  She has also seen other improvements in her health such as increased energy and sleep improvements.

Terri Larson, Minot, ND

On March 10, 2007, Terri suffered a bad fall and shattered her ankle bone which led to months of physical therapy, surgery to remove screws, plate, and scar tissue. Even after the surgery, Terri still had a very limited range of motion and intense pain.  “On a good day, I would have about four hours of use of my foot.  I could not go for walks or take care of my grandchildren.  My pain level was so high, that I spent lots of time on the couch with my ankle up.”
After five visits to Horizon Family Chiropractic, Terri noticed that the swelling in her ankle had gone down, the coloring had improved and she was starting to gain more range of motion.  Within months, she was able to help her family members with a move to Minot, was taking care of her grandchildren again, and could go for walks. “I feel now, that my ankle does not control my life.”

Terri is very pleased with the chiropractic care she received at HFC and has enjoyed being able to take advantage of the massage therapy offered. “I really feel that Dr. Christa and Dr. Matt gave me back my life!”

Tracie Hansen, Deering, ND

Tracie started seeking relief for her neck and shoulder tension about five years ago.  She frequently experienced headaches and had neck pain daily, which made her daily activities much less enjoyable.  She also had trouble sleeping comfortably.  At times, she would wake up and need to switch her position to be able to fall back asleep.

In her efforts to find relief, Tracie had tried different chiropractors and massage therapy. “I would feel better for a few days and then be back where I started”. Tracie had been told by medical professionals that her problems were muscular and the adjustments she had been receiving, alone, would not help her.

Tracie has seen a lot of improvement with her conditions since coming to HFC in October 2008. She is sleeping better and has found more ease using computers at work.  She is very happy with how she has been treated at Horizon Family Chiropractic.  She was particularly satisfied with the time the doctor takes to ask her questions at each visit.
